God's Passion

God is
always
was
yet becomes
as small as a speck
in a womb,
as a crumb
on a plate
placed
on the tip
of a tongue,
unleavened and raised
between fingers and thumbs,
lifted, beheld
manna become
Man
taken in hand
to be eaten,
absorbed
forgotten
remembered, re-offered, re-stored,
all whim and all wisdom
eternal
in fashion:
God's Gift
of Himself
in the Flesh
is all passion.

Poem by Rita A. Simmonds
in The Magnificat Year of Faith Companion
