Why Worship?

I was asked by my dear friend Fr. Bryan Stitt to give a talk in his parish--St. Mary's, Canton, NY--as part of its 6-part "Trust Truth" series on the intersection between faith and reason.  My topic was, "Why Worship?" on the reasonableness of the liturgy.  Here's a link to the talk and the Q&A that followed (just over an hour all together):

"I appeal to you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that you may prove what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect."
Romans 12:1-2

   Easter Sunday of the Resurrection of the Lord

It was water that was used to squelch the flames at Notre Dame;
it is also water--that of Baptism--that ignites the undying fire in a Christian's heart.

Do send our Governor a note--not as a political act, but as an act of love:

“Reverence must be paid even to those sinners whose souls seem to be dead because it is Christ, who is the life of the soul, who is dead in them. They are his tombs, and Christ in the tomb is still potentially the risen Christ.  We should never come to a sinner without the reverence that we would take to the Holy Sepulcher.  Pilgrims have traveled on foot for years to kiss the Holy Sepulcher, which is empty.  In sinners we can kneel at the tomb in which the dead Christ lies.”

Not the Only One

   The Baptism of the Lord

It’s pretty rare that the heavens open and God’s voice thunders from above, but the Father is speaking words of love over us at every moment, and constantly showering us with tokens of his affection.  It’s just that when we get too focused on ourselves—whether it’s admiring our accomplishments, bemoaning our weaknesses, or beating ourselves up over our failings—we fail to hear his voice and or recognize his kindnesses.  You are beloved to God beyond your wildest imagining!  The Father of Jesus takes great delight in you! That is your true identity.  Rest in it, and live from it, always.
